Realizing Research Based on Tri Dharma
Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is committed to realizing research based on the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi). In an effort to achieve meaningful research, we encourage interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships with various institutions and industries, both national and international. Universitas Sumatera Utara Institute for Research
The Universitas Sumatera Utara Institute for Research (LP USU) was established in 1970 under the name of the Institute for Research and Community Service, abbreviated as LP3M, and was chaired by Prof. Andreas T. Barus, M.Sc from 1970 to 1978. LP3M USU was later divided into 2 (two) separate institutes, namely the Institute for Research (LP) and the Institute for Community Service (LPPM).

The Universitas Sumatera Utara Institute for Scientific Writing Innovation and Intellectual Property Rights (LIPIHKI USU) is an academic support unit that functions as a facilitator and developer to increase the number and quality of publications in reputable scientific journals that have gained national and international recognition and possess IPR (Intellectual Property Rights). LIPIHKI is accountable to the Rector under the coordination of the Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation.
