Summer Course

USU PUBLIC RELATIONS – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is preparing to conduct an Internal Quality Audit (AMI) of the Internal Quality Assurance System (SPMI) as part of efforts to align standards and indicators at the Faculty/Graduate School and Study Program levels. The preparation was carried out at the Academic Senate Room, 3rd Floor, USU Rectorate Bureau, on Tuesday (15/9/2026).

USU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., emphasized that quality assurance needs to be positioned as an integral part of the core work of higher education institutions, rather than as an additional task carried out only when facing an accreditation process.
&nbsp;
Faculty leaders play an important role in ensuring that university standards do not stop at the stage of establishment but are genuinely implemented, monitored, evaluated, and followed up with improvements at the unit level.
<blockquote>“I hope that faculty leaders can become increasingly active in ensuring that university standards are truly translated into practice, implemented, monitored, evaluated, and followed up at their respective units,” said Prof. Poppy.</blockquote>

Documentation is an important component in demonstrating that quality improvement at USU is taking place in a concrete and systematic manner. With documented evidence of improvements, the accreditation process will no longer be something that is pursued only as the assessment approaches, but rather part of a work cycle that is carried out routinely.

Prof. Poppy expressed hope that the activity would produce a shared understanding and concrete steps across all faculties. Key aspects that need attention include standards, indicators, targets, measurement methods, data sources, as well as verification and validation processes.

Echoing this view, Prof. Setiawan, S.Kp., MNS., Ph.D., Acting Director of the Directorate of Quality Assurance at USU, explained that the completeness and verifiability of SPMI documents play an important role in fulfilling the requirements for an Unggul accreditation rating. According to him, documents that have not been verified or validated may become issues that need to be addressed promptly.
<blockquote>“If it is marked red, it means this is a serious concern for us, because SPMI is one of the necessary requirements for an Unggul accreditation rating. Therefore, USU cannot achieve an Unggul rating if even one aspect of our SPMI documentation is not verified or validated,” explained Prof. Setiawan.</blockquote>

In strengthening SPMI, the Quality Assurance Institute (LPM) plays a role in facilitating the formulation of standards as well as developing various quality assurance instruments. A number of existing policies and instruments also need to be updated to remain aligned with regulatory developments and the university’s needs.

USU PUBLIC RELATIONS – The Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU) held an International Summer Course entitled “Sustainable Tourism Planning and Design: North Sumatra Experience” on Tuesday (September 15, 2026). Held at the USU Faculty of Engineering Hall, the event focused on sustainable tourism planning and design by utilizing the cultural and landscape potential of North Sumatra, particularly the Lake Toba Caldera area.&nbsp;In his remarks, USU Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., stated that the Summer Course was one of USU’s international activities aimed at strengthening academic relations with students from various countries.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://konten.usu.ac.id/storage/year/2026-09/posts/68564/cFFfWOaj_summer-course-ft-1.jpeg"></figure><h6 style="text-align:center;">(Photo: Amri Affandi Simatupang)</h6>&nbsp;International activities such as the Summer Course provide students with opportunities to gain new experiences and interact with participants from other countries. According to him, such activities can contribute to USU’s efforts to develop international cooperation.&nbsp;“In recent years, Universitas Sumatera Utara has hosted several international activities. The objective is that we want to develop our industry through various international activities,” he explained.&nbsp;On the same occasion, Dean of the USU Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ir. Renita Manurung, M.T., stated that the Faculty of Engineering plays a role in supporting the development of North Sumatra through education and human resource development, particularly in the field of urban and regional planning.&nbsp;“Through educational activities, we prepare experts in urban planning as one of the contributions of the Faculty of Engineering to urban planning in Medan and North Sumatra Province,” she explained.&nbsp;She added that the Summer Course was also one way of providing students with learning experiences beyond the classroom. Students could directly observe how tourism concepts are implemented in the field, allowing them to gain practical understanding beyond theory.&nbsp;“This Summer Course is actually one of the activities that helps develop students’ creativity. Ir. Nurlisa Ginting, M.Sc., Ph.D., IAI, stated that the Summer Course was designed to explore sustainable tourism planning and design by using the rich cultural heritage and landscapes of North Sumatra, particularly the Lake Toba Caldera, as a learning environment for participants.&nbsp;“This Summer Course is designed to explore sustainable tourism planning and design by utilizing the rich cultural heritage and landscapes of North Sumatra, particularly the Lake Toba Caldera, as our learning environment,” she said.&nbsp;The Summer Course was attended by 67 participants, comprising 22 international participants and 45 participants from Indonesia. The participants came from 12 universities representing nine countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, China, Bangladesh, Mali, Tanzania, and Nigeria.

USU PUBLIC RELATIONS – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with Rumah Sawit Indonesia (RSI), held a public consultation entitled “Formulating a Farmer–Company Partnership Model to Build Competitive Farmers through Land Intensification and Industrialization” at the Digital Learning Center Building (DLCB) USU on Tuesday (September 15, 2026). The event discussed the development of a partnership model between farmers and companies to support capacity building among farmers and the development of the palm oil industry.&nbsp;In his remarks, USU Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., stated that the public consultation was one form of collaboration between USU and Rumah Sawit Indonesia. He explained that many USU researchers have a strong interest in palm oil-related research, making the event important for strengthening cooperation in the development of the sector.&nbsp;“This activity is important because many USU researchers focus on palm oil, and this is also part of our collaboration with Rumah Sawit Indonesia,” he said.&nbsp;He also stated that the activity is in line with the agro-industry targets outlined in USU’s Strategic Plan. Following the public consultation and FGD, USU could develop a Center of Excellence focusing on partnership models between the palm oil industry and the government. He expressed hope that the forum, which involved higher education institutions, would produce recommendations on partnership models and strengthen cooperation among farmers, companies, the government, and other relevant stakeholders.&nbsp;“Farmers are key actors in achieving food and energy sovereignty through plantations,” he said.&nbsp;Furthermore, Director of Partnerships and Plasma at PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara (Persero), Seger Budiardjo, S.E., M.M., expressed his appreciation for the organization of the event. He stated that Agrinas Palma Nusantara, as a relatively new company, needs input from various stakeholders and hopes that the forum will produce recommendations that support the development of partnerships with farmers.&nbsp;“As a relatively new company, we certainly need input from various parties, and we hope that this forum will produce valuable recommendations,” he said.&nbsp;Ahmad Munir, S.E., M.Si., a representative of BPD/BPDP, also discussed support for building integrated partnerships between farmers and companies, particularly in the upstream palm oil plantation sector. The discussion formed part of efforts to strengthen the development of farmers and the palm oil industry.&nbsp;“Support for the upstream sector is an important part of building an integrated partnership between farmers and companies,” he said.&nbsp;Yusfahri Perangin-angin, S.P., M.P., Secretary of the Agriculture and Food Security Agency of North Sumatra Province, representing the Governor of North Sumatra, stated that industrialization must provide benefits to farmers. He emphasized the importance of improving farmers’ welfare and capacity so that they can become more competitive.&nbsp;“Industrialization must benefit farmers, and its benefits should not be enjoyed only by certain parties,” he said.
