Assessment Weights and Student GPA Calculation
Grade Weighting
The following are the attached grade weightings:
A
= Scores greater than or equal to 80
B+
= Scores greater than or equal to 75 and less than 80
B
= Scores greater than or equal to 70 and less than 75
C+
= Scores greater than or equal to 65 and less than 70
C
= Scores greater than or equal to 60 and less than 65
D
= Scores greater than or equal to 50 and less than 60
E
= Scores below 50

Examination Assessment
- Students who have not yet completed qualifying exams, proposal seminars, research result seminars, thesis or equivalent examinations, master's thesis exams, or doctoral dissertation exams but have already registered these activities in the Study Plan (KRS) will receive a “T” (Pending) status in the academic information system at the end of the current semester.
- If a lecturer does not submit the examination grades for a course within 10 (ten) working days after the related exam is administered or after the current semester ends, Undergraduate students are deemed to have passed with a grade of B, while Master's and Doctoral students are deemed to have passed with a grade of B+.

Student GPA Calculation Mechanism
Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) Calculation
The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is calculated based on the total course load (in credits) taken within one semester multiplied by the performance weight (grade point) of each course, divided by the total number of credits taken. The formula is:
Kis
= Number of credits for each course in a given semester
Nis
= Grade weight (performance score) for each course in that semester
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) Calculation
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated based on the total course load (credits) taken from the first semester up to the most recent semester. The calculation uses the sum of each course’s final grade multiplied by its grade weight, divided by the total cumulative credits taken. The formula is:
Kik
= Number of credits for each course completed from Semester I to the latest semester
Nik
= Grade weight (performance score) for each course from Semester I to the latest semester

Conversion of Semester Credit Units (SKS) to European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)
Based on the Rector’s Decree of Universitas Sumatera Utara No. 1607/UN5.1.R/SK/SPB/2023, the conversion of credits from the Semester Credit Unit (SKS) system to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is applied to international students participating in academic programs at Universitas Sumatera Utara. The following outlines the conversion mechanism according to the level of education:
Undergraduate Program
| Credit Load | Conversion | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Credit Hour | = 170 minutes/week/semester = 170 minutes × 14 weeks = 2,380 minutes = 39.7 hours | a. The learning activities for 1 (one) credit hour in the instructional process, such as lectures, recitations, or tutorials, consist of: - 50 (fifty) minutes of scheduled instructional activities per week per semester; - 60 (sixty) minutes of structured assignments per week per semester; and - 60 (sixty) minutes of independent learning activities per week per semester. b. One semester consists of 16 weeks, including 2 weeks allocated for the mid-semester examination and final examination. |
| = 39.7 hours / 25 hours = 1.6 ECTS | One semester consists of 2 quarters. - One quarter equals 12.5–15 ECTS; therefore, 1 quarter is set at 15 ECTS as the maximum standard. - One ECTS equals 25–30 hours; therefore, 1 ECTS is set at 25 hours as the minimum standard. | |
| 144 Credit Hours | = 144 x 1.6 ECTS = 230.4 ECTS | Minimum curricular requirement: 144 credit hours |
| 6 Credit Hours | = 6 x 1.6 ECTS = 9.6 ECTS | Other academic activities consist of: - Foreign Language Courses: 2 credit hours - SKEM: 2 credit hours - POMITS: 2 credit hours |
Master’s Program
| Credit Load | Conversion | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Credit Hour | = 170 minutes/week/semester = 170 minutes × 14 weeks = 2,380 minutes = 39.7 hours | One semester consists of 16 weeks, including 2 weeks for the mid-semester and final examinations. |
| = 39.7 hours / 25 hours = 1.6 ECTS | - One semester consists of 2 quarters. - One quarter equals 12.5–15 ECTS. - One ECTS equals 25–30 hours; therefore, 1 ECTS is set at 25 hours as the minimum standard. | |
| 36 Credit Hours | = 36 x 1.6 ECTS = 57.6 ECTS | Minimum curricular requirement: 36 credit hours |
Doctoral Program
| Credit Load | Conversion | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Credit Hour | = 170 minutes/week/semester = 170 minutes × 14 weeks = 2,380 minutes = 39.7 hours | One semester consists of 16 weeks, including 2 weeks for the mid-semester and final examinations. |
| = 39.7 hours / 25 hours = 1.6 ECTS | - One semester consists of 2 quarters. - One quarter equals 12.5–15 ECTS. - One ECTS equals 25–30 hours; therefore, 1 ECTS is set at 25 hours as the minimum standard. | |
| 42 Credit Hours | = 42 x 1.6 ECTS = 67.2 ECTS | Minimum curricular requirement: 42 credit hours |
To fulfill the minimum ECTS requirements for the Master’s / Applied Master’s Program and the Doctoral / Applied Doctoral Program, the conversion from credit hours to ECTS may also be calculated using alternative methods, namely:
- Adding the workload of additional academic activities actually undertaken by students during the period of study; and/or
- Calculating the actual duration of learning activities in each course and subsequently converting them into actual credit hours
