The Master’s Program in Public Administration at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized an International Summer Course titled “Local Leadership for Sustainable Development.” The program was held in collaboration with the Consulate of India and aimed to serve as a platform for learning, idea exchange, and cross-country collaboration. It focused on understanding the role of local leadership in transforming public administration, particularly in disaster resilience governance as a key element of climate resilience and inclusive sustainable development.In this context, disaster resilience governance refers to governance systems that strengthen the capacity of local governments, communities, and stakeholders to anticipate, respond to, and adapt to disaster risks increasingly influenced by climate change.Chair of the organizing committee, Dra. Asima Yanty Sylvania Siahaan, M.A., Ph.D., expressed hope that USU will continue to be recognized as a center for knowledge development relevant to global societal needs, particularly in local leadership and inclusive disaster resilience governance. In addition to expanding international academic networks, the program is also expected to enhance the university’s reputation and attract international students to pursue their studies at USU.“Through this program, we aim to strengthen USU’s contribution to science and humanity, in line with its vision as a global barometer of knowledge,” she stated during the event.The program demonstrated that a combination of online learning, academic discussions, and field research can effectively deepen participants’ understanding of real-world local issues. Dra. Asima further noted that the initiative successfully built international networks, strengthened USU’s collaboration with local governments, and opened opportunities for follow-up initiatives, including the development of policy briefs.<img class="image" src="https://konten.usu.ac.id/storage/year/2026-05/posts/62366/WhatsApp Image 2026-05-04 at 14.05.35 (1).jpeg">“It can continue to be developed with a broader participant scope, stronger international collaboration, and more tangible policy contributions for regional development,” she added.The program involved 35 participants from India, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Nigeria, and Indonesia. Participants engaged in online sessions from April 21–24, 2026, followed by field trips to Karo Regency—an area prone to disasters—and Medan City from April 25–30, 2026. The program concluded on April 30, 2026.

Medan, HUMAS USU – The Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Muryanto Amin, officially inaugurated the renovated musalla of the Faculty of Law (FH USU) on Monday (May 4, 2026). The renovation is part of efforts to enhance worship facilities while also supporting student activities.
In his remarks, Prof. Muryanto expressed appreciation for the support of alumni and donors, emphasizing that the facility now serves broader functions. “This musalla is not only a place of worship but also a space for character building and academic development for students,” he stated.
Dean of FH USU, Mahmul Siregar, noted that the facility holds historical value as a hub for student activities, although it had been neglected during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This place used to be vibrant as a center for student activities but became underutilized during the pandemic. This renovation is an effort to revive its function,” he explained.
He further added that the renovation was initiated by alumni across generations by reallocating reunion funds. “We hope this musalla can once again serve as a place of worship as well as a space for student discussions and interaction,” he said.
Chair of the organizing committee, Hasim Purba, stated that the reconstruction of the building—originally established between 1979 and 1980—has now been completed with a more representative design.
“This building is designed with two floors to accommodate both worship and academic activities,” he explained. The first floor is designated for prayer with a capacity of over 100 worshippers, while the second floor can accommodate around 200 people for discussions, religious studies, and lectures.
“Moving forward, this space will become an integrated center for academic, social, and religious activities,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the FH USU Alumni Association (IKA FH USU), Hasrul Benny Harahap, described the renovation as a reflection of the strong sense of solidarity within the FH USU community. “This is not just a physical development, but also a symbol of togetherness and alumni’s commitment to the campus,” he concluded.

The event was officially opened by the Head of Tanjung Pura District, Tengku Reza Aditiya, S.IP, who expressed support for efforts to enhance mental health services at the community level. In his remarks, he appreciated the contribution of FK USU academics in supporting health development and emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration among healthcare workers, community cadres, and local government.“A comprehensive and community-based mental health approach is key to improving the quality of life of the elderly,” he stated.<figure class="image"><img src="https://konten.usu.ac.id/storage/year/2026-05/posts/62340/WhatsApp Image 2026-04-30 at 17.09.15.webp"></figure>The head of the community service team, Prof. Dr. Elmeida Effendy, dr., M.Ked., Sp.KJ., Subsp.B.P.(K), explained that the program aims to enhance the capacity of health cadres and empower communities in early detection and management of psychogeriatric issues. According to her, mental health disorders among the elderly—such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline—are still often overlooked at the community level.“The KATANGJA Program is designed as a sustainable, community-based mental health service model involving healthcare professionals, community cadres, and village governments. It also aims to reduce stigma and improve mental health literacy in society,” she explained.The activity involved mental health cadres and elderly participants from 18 villages and 1 sub-district in Tanjung Pura, along with representatives from the Pantai Cermin Public Health Center. The program included training for mental health cadres and screening sessions using standardized instruments such as the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE).Through this initiative, it is expected that a more structured early detection system will be established at the community level, along with improved access to integrated mental health services. Additionally, the program aims to create a more supportive environment for the elderly in maintaining their mental health and overall quality of life.This initiative marks a concrete step by FK USU in supporting inclusive, sustainable, and community-based mental health development in Langkat Regency.</div></div></div></div></div></div></section>
