HUMAS USU – The Academic Senate (Senat Akademik, SA) of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) recently conducted the election of rector candidates in the Academic Senate Room, USU Rectorate Bureau, on Thursday (25/9/2025) to determine the top three candidates for USU Rector from eight candidates who passed the initial screening for audition. After conducting a voting process (one man one vote), 112 senate members carried out a democratic, honest, and fair election. The election results officially determined three candidates who will subsequently be chosen by the 21 Members of the Board of Trustees (MWA) in Jakarta. The three candidates are Prof. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., who secured 53 votes; the second highest vote-getter, Prof. Poppy Anjelisa Z Hasibuan, who received 18 votes; and the third highest, Prof. Isfenti Sadalia, who garnered 16 votes. Meanwhile, other candidates who obtained the fourth highest votes in descending order were Prof. Himsar Ambarita with 13 votes, Dr. Dr. Johny Marpaung with 9 votes, Prof. Hasim Purba with 2 votes, and the remaining candidates, Dr. Firman Syarif and Prof. Syahril Efendi, received 0 votes. Additionally, 1 vote was considered invalid. The Chairperson of the USU Academic Senate, Prof. Budi Agustono, who opened the event, appreciated all Academic Senate (SA) members present for supporting the rector election agenda for the upcoming period. “This is an important agenda, because our votes will determine the future of USU in selecting the best individuals who will occupy the rector position,” he stated. Following the election by the Academic Senate, Prof. Budi Agustono explained that there remains one more process to be conducted, namely the selection by the USU Board of Trustees (MWA). “Thus, the top three rector candidates will be selected at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) by MWA members on October 2, 2025,” he said. Prof. Budi Agustono hopes that the vote results from the Academic Senate represent the best outcome for USU’s advancement. He mentioned that all candidates participating in the contest are genuinely individuals who care about USU’s progress, but the Academic Senate members must choose who, in their opinion, is the best among the good. “I hope the forthcoming selection process conducted by the MWA proceeds smoothly. We also ask all parties to respect the election results and fully support whoever will become the next USU rector,” emphasized this Professor of History. Brief Profiles As is known, the three elected rector candidates are not newcomers in the history of educational development at USU. They are the best sons and daughters born and nurtured at Universitas Sumatera Utara. The candidate with the highest number of votes in the Academic Senate election is Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.S.Sos., M.Si. He pursued his doctoral education at the University of Indonesia with a specialization in Political Science. Prof. Mury currently serves as USU Rector, having achieved numerous changes and recorded many accomplishments for USU’s advancement during his leadership period. Next is Prof. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., who completed her latest education at Universitas Sumatera Utara, specializing in Pharmaceutical Sciences. She currently serves as Vice Rector III, having significantly contributed to USU’s transformation during her term as Vice Rector III. The candidate with the third highest votes is Prof. Dr. Isfenti Sadalia, S.E., M.E., who completed her final education at Universitas Airlangga with a specialization in Management Studies. Prof. Isfenti currently serves as the first Dean of the Vocational Faculty at USU and has made substantial contributions to the faculty and university in her long career as a lecturer. &nbsp;

The panelists at the event were Prof. Dr. Erman Munir, M.Sc., Prof. Dr. Ir. Fahmi, S.T., M.Sc., I.P.M., and Dr. Harmona Daulay, S.Sos., M.Si. The candidates presented their programs in turn, beginning with candidate number 1, Dr. Drs. Firman Syarif, M.Si., Ak., C.A., followed consecutively by Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si.; Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt.; Dr. dr. The central theme highlighted by all candidates was internationalization, in line with the vision of Universitas Sumatera Utara. General Police (Ret.) Drs. Agus Andrianto, S.H., M.H., who opened the event virtually, underlined once again that the position of rector is a profound mandate that carries significant responsibilities, and thus, whoever is elected must be supported by all stakeholders. “This audition is an opportunity for the public to see and assess the future work programs of the rector candidates. I believe all candidates have visions, missions, and work programs that align with USU’s strategic plan to become a globally recognized campus,” stated General Police (Ret.) Drs. Agus Andrianto. On this occasion, he also expressed his gratitude to all parties who worked hard to ensure the success of the selection and screening process up to the audition stage. The Chairperson of MWA expressed hope that subsequent stages until the final election would also proceed smoothly. Previously, the Chairperson of the Selection and Screening Committee for USU Rector Candidates, Prof. Dr. Tamrin, M.Sc., stated in his remarks that the entire process from registration to screening had been successfully carried out. “Out of nine applicants who submitted their forms, eight passed the administrative selection,” he explained. Prof. Tamrin added that after the audition, on September 25, 2025, the Academic Senate would vote to select the top three candidates. The final stage would then be the election conducted by the 21 members of the Board of Trustees, to be held at the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education. “This audition is not just a formality, but a genuine opportunity for the rector candidates to present their ideas for the advancement of USU in the future. Both onsite and online participants can directly witness how the candidates envision their work programs for the upcoming term,” he added. During the presentation session, candidate number 1, Dr. Drs. Firman Syarif, M.Si., Ak., C.A., presented his vision titled USU’s Vision by Firman Syarif: University for Financial Honesty and Transparency and Social Problem Concern. Candidate number 2, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., the incumbent rector, presented the concept of The Era of Ultimate Excellence with five general policies: Adaptive Governance and Organization, Tridarma-Driven University, Digitalization and Smart Campus, Enterprise and Endowment Fund, and Internationalization and Global Branding. Prof. Muryanto emphasized that USU currently has a solid foundation to achieve greater targets. “All the achievements realized over the past four years are a strong capital for USU to move forward. Therefore, the support and synergy of all stakeholders across the academic community, including alumni, are essential,” he remarked. Candidate number 3, Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., presented the concept USU Towards an Entrepreneurial University. Candidate number 4, Dr. dr. Johny Marpaung, M.Ked (OG), Sp.OG, introduced the GEMILANG concept. Candidate number 5, Prof. Dr. Syahril Efendi, S.Si., M.I.T., was followed by Prof. Dr. Isfenti Sadalia, S.E., M.E., Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., and finally Prof. Dr. Hasim Purba, S.H., M.Hum. Each candidate was given 15 minutes to present, followed by responses from the panelists and audience. Dean of FIB USU, Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., also underscored the faculty’s new direction, which strengthens internationalization. Programs such as summer courses, visiting professors, and student exchanges have expanded academic networks across nations. The hope is that FIB’s cultural documentation can one day become collections housed in university libraries worldwide, opening global access to Indonesia’s local heritage. “This 60th Dies Natalis marks a momentum for FIB to reaffirm its role as a cultural home with a global reach,” Prof. Thyrhaya remarked. Chair of the 60th Dies Natalis Committee, Dra. Khairawati, M.A., Ph.D., added a special touch to this year’s celebration by encouraging all participants to wear traditional attire, symbolizing that cultural diversity is a strength worthy of celebration. “We want cultural documentation to serve as a bridge, allowing the nation’s heritage to be recognized by global generations,” she stressed.
