HUMAS USU – The Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., emphasized that the roles of Heads of Study Programs and Heads of Departments extend far beyond administrative duties. In today's increasingly competitive higher education landscape, academic leaders are expected to drive innovation, cultivate a dynamic academic culture, and produce graduates who are globally competitive.

The statement was delivered during an orientation program for newly appointed Heads of Study Programs and Departments across USU, held from July 17 to July 20, 2026.

In his presentation, the Rector explained that Heads of Study Programs bear strategic responsibility for shaping the direction of academic disciplines, improving faculty quality, mentoring students, and ensuring that all academic processes are effectively implemented and produce high-quality outcomes.

"Heads of Study Programs must be more than administrative managers. They must become academic leaders who are capable of directing the university's academic vision, promoting scholarly innovation, and fostering an ecosystem that enables both lecturers and students to achieve excellence," said Prof. Muryanto Amin.

According to the Rector, strong academic leadership is a critical factor in transforming USU into a leading university. Therefore, every Head of Study Program must ensure that each policy and work program contributes meaningfully to improving educational quality.

"We want every academic process to be well managed while producing high-quality outcomes. Our orientation is perfect in process and result—a sound process must lead to the best possible achievements," he stated.

In addition to strengthening academic leadership, the Rector highlighted the importance of organizational consolidation and human resource development. He explained that effective governance serves as the foundation for faculties, departments, and study programs to achieve the university's institutional goals.

He further emphasized that all academic leaders should share a common vision so that every policy and initiative aligns with the university's long-term development strategy.

"We must move forward in unison. Organizational consolidation is essential to achieving both the university's short-term and long-term objectives together," he said.

The orientation program also introduced USU's long-term and medium-term institutional development framework, which serves as a strategic roadmap for strengthening governance systems, institutional management, and academic quality.

Through the orientation, the Rector expressed his hope that all Heads of Study Programs and Departments will become key drivers of transformation, enabling USU to continuously improve the quality of its education, research, and community service.
