USU PR — Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Rector Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., said that communication skills are one of the main keys to achieving success, both in pursuing a career and in expressing ideas so that they can be accepted by others.
Therefore, students should continuously develop their communication skills. Being intelligent is not enough if one cannot express or communicate that intelligence to others in a simple and understandable way.
"Therefore, practice how you convey your ideas, thoughts, or opinions to others in a good way," he said while officially opening the 2026 Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) at Universitas Sumatera Utara, attended by 8,360 new students on Wednesday (August 12, 2026).
The USU Rector emphasized that communication skills should be continuously practiced in a polite manner without hurting others, including practicing proper etiquette when using social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and others.
"So, I want to remind you that if you have a good IQ, good morals, and, in addition, good communication skills, I believe you are already on the path toward achieving excellence in your career. It also gives you a strong foundation to become an outstanding graduate and, after graduation, quickly secure employment," he said.
Addressing the thousands of new students, the Rector also encouraged them to achieve accomplishments during their studies at USU by making use of the various facilities available at the university to explore and develop their abilities.
USU will also have a sport science facility that integrates sports with intellectual development, allowing reasoning and physical activity to become interconnected aspects of student life at USU.
"Continuously upgrade your abilities so that the aspirations you have developed as students can be realized after you graduate from Universitas Sumatera Utara. Become outstanding graduates, respected and valued by the industrial world, and bring honor to USU," he said.
The Rector further reminded the students to make the most of every opportunity available to them.
"Because opportunities do not come twice. Make the most of this opportunity. Do not let even a second of this golden opportunity pass you by. Be students who achieve outstanding accomplishments. Do not overlook even a second of every opportunity to do good and achieve everything you can throughout your university journey," he added.

Meanwhile, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni, Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., said that PKKMB marked the beginning of the campus orientation process, specifically designed to help new students adapt to the USU environment and serve as an important first step in their academic journey.
Over the next several days, new USU students will have the opportunity to learn more about various aspects of campus life, ranging from available facilities and student activities to academic and non-academic services.
"We hope that students will actively participate in every session provided. Do not hesitate to ask questions if anything is unclear, and try to build good relationships with fellow students and lecturers. This is a valuable moment to begin a new chapter in your lives," she said.
