“We came here for the purpose of, as they say, discussing and exchanging ideas regarding the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine at UIN North Sumatra, Medan,” said Rector of UINSU
HUMAS USU - Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) warmly welcomed the visit of the rectorate of Universitas Islam Negri Sumatera Utara (UINSU) for a courtesy call and exchange of ideas regarding the planned establishment of a Faculty of Medicine at UINSU. The meeting occurred in the rector's office on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The rector of UINSU, Prof. Dr. Nurhayati, M.Ag, stated during the visit that the meeting was part of efforts to discuss and exchange ideas regarding the steps that need to be prepared for the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine.
“We came here for the purpose of, as they say, discussing and exchanging ideas regarding the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine at UIN North Sumatra, Medan,” said Nurhayati.
Furthermore, the UINSU Rector explained that there are two main priorities in establishing the Faculty of Medicine: human resource readiness (HR) and infrastructure such as the presence of an educational hospital. She stated that the faculty cannot be formally established without the appropriate human resources even if the infrastructure is adequate.
“Because if the most important requirements are not met, even if the facilities and infrastructure are already in place, it will not be possible,” explained Nurhayati.
At the same time, the Rector of UINSU emphasized that collaboration with USU will continue through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Faculty of Medicine at USU and UINSU. This collaboration will include faculty and student exchanges, and most importantly, a mentoring program from USU.
“However, the most important thing is that we want mentoring from the USU Faculty of Medicine for UIN North Sumatra, Medan, in establishing the UINSU Faculty of Medicine,”
Currently, the USU Faculty of Medicine has mentored three other institutions in accordance with existing regulations. Therefore, UINSU hopes to change rules, particularly Ministerial Regulations, so universities like USU can provide broader mentoring.
“So we hope that through the USU Rector, we can provide input to the ministry, especially the Minister of Health, for changes to the Ministerial Regulation,” said Nurhayati.
Establishing the Faculty of Medicine is a concrete step toward realizing the President of the Republic of Indonesia's program to build 300 medical faculties in Indonesia and achieve Indonesia's Golden Age by 2045.
