USU PUBLIC RELATIONS – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), through its Task Force for the Prevention, Eradication, Abuse, and Illicit Trafficking of Narcotics (P4GN), conducted drug screening for members of the USU academic community at the USU Student Center on Thursday (October 8, 2026).

The activity was part of USU’s efforts to promote early detection and prevent drug abuse on campus. A total of 168 participants, comprising USU lecturers and educational staff, took part in the screening.

University Secretary of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Ir. Ikhsan Siregar, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., said that the screening should be viewed positively as part of efforts to prevent drug abuse and protect members of the academic community. He emphasized that preventing drug abuse is a shared responsibility in creating a healthy, safe, and productive campus environment.

“Therefore, prevention efforts must be our shared responsibility. They should not be the sole responsibility of university leaders or a particular work unit,” he said.

Chair of the USU P4GN Task Force, Prof. Dr. Lita Sri Andayani, SKM., M.Kes., stated that the screening had been conducted on an ongoing basis. According to her, the continuity of this activity reflects USU’s commitment to fostering a healthy, disciplined, and integrity-driven lifestyle free from drug abuse.

“The screening has been conducted since early 2023. The continuation of this activity is a manifestation of USU’s commitment to supporting the prevention and eradication of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking through P4GN,” she said.

In an interview, Prof. Lita explained that the screening is conducted on a rotating and random basis among members of the academic community, particularly lecturers and educational staff. Meanwhile, student screening has been conducted since the initial admission stage as part of early prevention and detection efforts.

“This is an effort to promote prevention and early detection, so that we can continue to foster a healthy lifestyle and prevent drug abuse,” she explained in an interview.

Person in Charge of Prevention and Community Empowerment at the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of North Sumatra Province, Soritua Sihombing, M.Pd., explained that prevention efforts would not stop with this activity. BNN will also continue its efforts through educational sessions for members of the academic community. In the future, it is hoped that P4GN teams can be established at the faculty level involving lecturers, educational staff, and students so that prevention efforts can be carried out more extensively.

“We at the National Narcotics Agency hope that this can serve as an inspiration for other universities. Not only USU and other universities in North Sumatra, but also universities in other regions,” he said in an interview.

Through this activity, USU and the BNN of North Sumatra Province continue to strengthen their collaboration in creating a healthy educational environment free from drug abuse. The screening is expected to become part of a culture of prevention while raising awareness among all members of the academic community to work together in maintaining a healthy campus environment.
