“A professorship is not merely a personal achievement, but also a moral and academic responsibility to strengthen the university’s reputation through research, publications, and innovation. Collaboration and a constructive spirit are essential for USU to produce impactful scholarly work,” said Prof. Muryanto.

USU PR – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has once again recorded a proud academic achievement through the awarding of Professor Decrees (Surat Keputusan/ SK Guru Besar) to two distinguished lecturers, namely Prof. Dr. Esther Sorta Mauli Nababan, M.Sc., from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), and Prof. Dr. Fahmi Natigor Nasution, S.E., M.Acc., Ak., CA., CMA., from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB).

The decree award ceremony was held on Tuesday (10/21/2025) in the Academic Senate Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, and was led directly by the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., accompanied by vice rectors and leaders of the related faculties.

In his remarks, Prof. Muryanto Amin stated that the awarding of a Professor Decree represents an important milestone in a lecturer’s academic career, while also serving as a reminder to continuously enhance research productivity and make tangible contributions to the university and society.

“A professorship is not merely a personal achievement, but also a moral and academic responsibility to strengthen the university’s reputation through research, publications, and innovation. Collaboration and a constructive spirit are essential for USU to produce impactful scholarly work,” said Prof. Muryanto.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining academic productivity and scientific integrity amid the demands of higher education transformation. Professors, he continued, are expected to serve as role models for the academic community in producing innovative works that enhance USU’s reputation at the national and international levels.

During the interview session, Prof. Dr. Fahmi Natigor Nasution explained that his expertise lies in the field of Management Control Systems, a discipline that integrates accounting and management to ensure organizations operate within ethical frameworks and sound governance.

“Management control systems help organizations stay on the right track, minimize risks and fraud, and ensure operational efficiency. Through this research, we aim to strengthen governance systems across various sectors, both public and private,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Esther Sorta Mauli Nababan stated that her research focuses on dynamic systems and mathematical modeling applied to environmental and natural resource management.

“I use dynamic systems approaches and mathematical modeling to develop sustainable conservation models. This approach encompasses economic, social, environmental, and policy aspects toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13, 14, and 15,” she explained.

Furthermore, Prof. Esther also advised young lecturers to remain committed to carrying out the Tridharma of Higher Education, particularly in research and learning activities that have a meaningful impact on students and society.

“Carry out all academic responsibilities consistently. Most importantly, we must be able to help students understand the benefits of the knowledge they learn so that they can apply it to their lives and future,” she said.

The awarding of these Professor Decrees demonstrates USU’s commitment to strengthening academic quality and expanding interdisciplinary research networks. By increasing the number of professors, USU continues to move toward its vision of becoming an impactful research university with global competitiveness.
