Medan, HUMAS USU – The Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU) once again demonstrated its international presence by participating in the 20th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (WCP) 2026, held from July 12–17, 2026, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), Australia.

WCP is one of the world's leading international scientific congresses in pharmacology, organized every four years by the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) in collaboration with The Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT). Rotating among host countries, the congress serves as a global platform for academics, researchers, clinicians, and pharmacology practitioners to present research findings, exchange knowledge, and establish scientific collaborations.

At WCP 2026, two scientific papers from FK USU were accepted for presentation.

Prof. dr. Tri Widyawati, M.Si., Ph.D. presented a poster entitled "Edamame Ethanol Extract for Malnutrition: Bridging In Vivo Evidence and Computational Pharmacology." The research was a collaborative project between the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine, USU, and Universiti Sains Malaysia, with the research team consisting of Tri Widyawati, Faqih A. Winata, Hans A. M. Sagala, Muhammad R. F. Syariq, Dwi R. Anggraini, Sri M. Kaban, Milahayati Daulay, and Nor Adlin Md. Yusoff.

The study contributes to the achievement of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Meanwhile, Muhammad Rozan F. Syariq, an undergraduate medical student at FK USU, delivered an oral presentation entitled "Knowing the Label, Ignoring the Risk? A Faculty-Based Assessment of Self-Medication Literacy." Conducted by Muhammad Rozan F. Syariq, Tri Widyawati, Faqih A. Winata, Hans A. M. Sagala, and Dian A. E. Pitaloka, the study assessed self-medication literacy among students in health-related disciplines as a foundation for developing educational strategies that promote the rational and safe use of medicines.

This research supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

FK USU's participation in WCP 2026 was supported through the EQUITY Program, funded by the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. The participation is expected to further strengthen international research networks, enhance the dissemination of scientific findings, and expand the contribution of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, to the advancement of pharmacological science and research at the global level.
