HUMAS USU – Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the Development of Strategic Technology Research Centers for USU and North Sumatra on Tuesday (05/05/2026) at the Academic Senate Hall.

The activity aimed to strengthen the research ecosystem while formulating the direction for developing strategic technology centers that are competitive at both national and international levels.

In his remarks, USU Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Cooperation, Himsar Ambarita, emphasized the urgency of establishing research centers to strengthen the contribution of higher education institutions to technological development. These efforts are supported through the enhancement of facilities, such as integrated laboratories and the development of science parks.

“This FGD marks the initial step in preparing a research roadmap aligned with the needs of strategic industries such as semiconductors, mechatronics, and drone-based technology,” he stated.

One of the speakers, Muhammad Furqon Al-Baruqi, explained that research development does not always have to start from scratch, but can instead utilize existing resources and further develop them toward downstreaming and innovative products.

“Regions must be more proactive and confident in developing their research potential, as North Sumatra has significant potential to strengthen national strategic research,” he said.

Through this FGD, USU aims to formulate research policy directions capable of sustainably enhancing technological competitiveness at both national and international levels.
