In the democratic election, Prof. Muryanto Amin prevailed with 22 votes, while the other two candidates, Prof. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., and Prof. Dr. Isfenti Sadalia, S.E., M.E., each received 4 votes, with one abstention.
The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, represented by the Vice Minister, Prof. Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd., stated in his remarks that the Rector Election is an important and strategic five-year organizational ritual. Although it is not an extraordinary event within the governance cycle of higher education institutions, it always carries significant responsibility for all stakeholders.
“The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology consistently reminds us that rapidly changing social dynamics demand mindsets and ways of thinking that are far from ordinary. Therefore, whoever is entrusted with the role of rector must not think routinely or conventionally. Indonesia already has enough ordinary individuals, while universities should be spaces for extraordinary people,” said Prof. Dr. Fauzan.
The Chair of the USU Board of Trustees, Police General (Ret.) Drs. Agus Andrianto, S.H., M.H., expressed his hope that the elected rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., will lead USU to become a university that is proud, progressive, at the forefront, and capable of providing significant benefits to the nation and the state.
“The rector is expected to build synergy with all elements of the academic community and stakeholders to guide USU toward achieving its major goals and aspirations, namely becoming a higher education institution with academic excellence that serves as a benchmark for scientific advancement and is able to compete at the global level,” he stated.
The USU Board of Trustees explained that the Plenary Meeting for the Rector Election of Universitas Sumatera Utara for the 2026–2031 Term was conducted after the Chair of the Board received a letter from the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology through the Secretary General of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Letter Number 2959/A/HM.00.03/2025 dated November 10, 2025, concerning the submission of the schedule for the implementation of the USU Rector Election for the 2026–2031 Term.
