The term of office of the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) for the 2021-2026 period, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos, M.Si, will end on January 28, 2026. In accordance with Government Regulation No. 16 of 2014, Article 29, Paragraph (4), the election of the Rector shall be held no later than five (5) months before the end of the Rector's term of office. In accordance with this mandate, USU will hold an election for the Rector for the 2026-2031 term. On August 19, 2025, the USU Board of Trustees (MWA) formed and appointed the Selection Committee for the 2026-2031 USU Rector Candidates, with USU MWA Decree Number 7/UN5.1.MWA/SK/TP.00.00/2025. The committee consists of four members from the MWA, namely Prof. Dr. Tamrin, M.Sc, Fadhullah, S.E, M.M, Dr. Husni Thamrin, S.Sos, MSP, Ir. Indra Chahaya S, M.Si, and three members from the USU Academic Senate, namely Boy Laksamana, SH, M.Hum, Mhd. Pujiono, SS, M.Hum, Ph.D, and Dr. Muhammad Anggia Muchtar, S.T, MM.IT; three members from the USU Professors Council, namely Prof. Drs. Heru Santosa, MS, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Ameta Primasari, drg., MDSc, M.Kes, Sp.MM, and Prof. Dr. Apri Heri Iswanto, S.Hut, M.Si, and one member from the USU Rectorate, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Luhut Sihombing, MP.

The Selection Committee for the USU Rector Candidate for the 2026-2031 period invites Indonesian citizens who meet the requirements to become the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara for the 2026-2031 period. The selection process will be carried out in 3 (three) stages, namely the Selection Stage, Screening Stage, and Election Stage.

The screening stage will be held from August 28 to September 24, 2025, including registration, form submission, administrative selection, announcement of candidates who pass the administrative selection, and auditions. During the audition stage, the Rector candidates will be asked to present their track records and achievements, entrepreneurship, program plans, and breakthroughs to be made. They will also convey their leadership vision and mission, insights about USU, and strategic plans based on USU's General Policy and Long-Term Development Plan. The auditions will be attended by all members of the USU Academic Senate, who will vote during the screening process, as well as the MWA, SA, DGB, Rectorate, Dean, Directors, Heads of Institutions, Heads of Agencies, Heads of Departments, Heads of Study Programs, Heads of Bureaus, community representatives, student representatives, alumni representatives, and other elements to be determined by the committee.

The USU Academic Senate will conduct the screening stage on September 25, 2025. At this screening stage, all 112 members of the USU SA will vote to determine the three Rector Candidates to be submitted to the USU MWA.

The USU MWA will conduct the election stage, which is scheduled for October 2, 2025, to elect and appoint the USU Rector for the 2026-2031 period. The Chair of the Committee, Prof. Dr. Tamrin, M.Sc, conveyed this to a number of print and electronic media representatives in Medan on Wednesday (08/27/2025).

Tamrin added that “it is hoped that the USU Rector who is elected will meet all the requirements and have comprehensive abilities, namely the ability to respond to all challenges to realize USU as an ”Impactful Campus", gather funds from USU's potential, and improve the quality or position of USU at the national and global levels.
