LAM-PTKes Conducts Accreditation Visit for Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine Subspecialty Program at FK USU

HUMAS USU — The Indonesian Independent Accreditation Institute for Higher Education in Health (LAM-PTKes) conducted an on-site assessment visit for the accreditation of the Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine Subspecialty Program (Sp-2) at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU). The assessment took place in the FK USU Hall, 3rd Floor, on Tuesday (18 August 2026).
USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., emphasized the importance of strengthening laboratory facilities and infrastructure to support the quality of education and research. The provision of medical tools in the integrated laboratory is one of the university's main priorities.
The Rector also emphasized that, in addition to supporting education and research activities, the development of the central research laboratory is also aimed at generating additional revenue for the university through a revenue-sharing scheme.
“In addition to education and research activities, the development of this central research laboratory is also directed toward generating additional revenue (revenue sharing) for the university,” explained the Rector.
Meanwhile, dr. Faisal Habib, Sp.JP(K), FIHA, FAPSC, Director of Human Resources, Education, and Research at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, stated that pulmonology and respiratory services are among the hospital's flagship services.
Dr. Faisal also explained that FK USU and the hospital have coordinated and established collaborations with several partner hospitals as satellite hospitals to ensure an adequate variety of clinical cases for students.

In line with this, the Head of the LAM-PTKes Assessment Team, Prof. dr. Wiwien Heru Wiyono, PhD, Sp.P(K), expressed appreciation for the strong cooperation between the faculty and hospital leadership. This synergy was considered a key asset in the implementation and continued development of the subspecialty program, enabling it to produce competent and outstanding specialists in pulmonology and respiratory medicine who are prepared to support healthcare services in Indonesia.

In an interview, dr. Syamsul Bihar, M.Ked(Paru), M.H., Sp.P., Subsp. P.I.G.D.N., FISR, Head of the Department of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine Subspecialty, welcomed the LAM-PTKes on-site assessment for the accreditation of the Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine Subspecialty Program at FK USU, which is a pioneer in Indonesia.
He also expressed hope that the assessors would recognize the program's strengths while providing recommendations to help realize its vision and mission, particularly in improving education and healthcare services in thoracic oncology, pulmonary intervention, and pulmonary infections.
“I hope the assessors can see the strengths of the program while also providing input to help us achieve our vision and mission, particularly in improving education and healthcare services in thoracic oncology, pulmonary intervention, and pulmonary infections,” he said.
