“We have 10 study programs in FIB, one of which is literature and language. Tagore's work is expected to provide new insights for students in analyzing literary works, explained the Dean of FIB USU.”

USU PR - The Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) held a General Lecture as part of the series of the 59th Anniversary of FIB USU. The event carried the theme “Rabindranath Tagore: Values, History, Culture and Literature”. It took place at the T. Amir Ridwan Building on Tuesday (10/09/2024).

This public lecture aims to provide a deeper understanding of the human values promoted by Rabindranath Tagore, an influential Indian literary figure.

Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., Dean of FIB USU, stated that the selection of this topic is relevant to the focus of studies at FIB, especially in the literature and language study program. According to her, Rabindranath Tagore's works can be used as a reference for students to compare with literary works from Indonesia and England.

“We have 10 study programs at FIB, one of which is literature and language. Tagore's works are expected to provide new insights for students in analyzing literary works,” he explained.

On the other hand, FIB USU also sees this opportunity as a step to strengthen international relations, especially in terms of academic collaboration. Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., stated that FIB USU is open to inviting lecturers and experts from abroad to contribute to teaching in order to support the internationalization steps carried out by the university.

“Towards internationalization is the step we are aiming for. Therefore, we are open to inviting lecturers and experts from abroad to teach at FIB USU,” he said.

Ravi Shanker Goel, as a guest speaker at this event, also expressed his views on Rabindranath Tagore's influence in the world of literature and culture, which is not limited to India, but extends to Southeast Asia and the world. He highlighted how Rabindranath Tagore's literature, music and novels are still relevant in this modern era.

“Rabindranath Tagore's importance cannot be explained in just a few words. His work, including in literature, music, and novels, continues to influence the people of the world,” he said.

Ravi Shanker Goel also emphasized the important role of this public lecture, which was to give students a deeper insight into the influence of Rabindranath Tagore's works in the modern era. He invited participants to observe for themselves how the material presented could be useful in literary and cultural studies.
