Faculty of Forestry Holds Tree-Planting Movement to Commemorate World Environment Day

MEDAN – HUMAS USU – The Faculty of Forestry of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized a Tree-Planting Movement in commemoration of World Environment Day on Friday (June 5, 2026) at the Faculty of Forestry area in Kuala Bekala. The event was attended by members of the academic community and various environmental partners.
In her remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., emphasized that the activity was more than simply planting trees; it represented a tangible commitment to environmental conservation and future sustainability.
“One tree planted today brings millions of benefits for future generations. This is not merely tree planting; it is a long-term investment in the future,” she said.
She also stressed that the initiative reflects a shared responsibility to address environmental challenges.
“What we are doing today is a manifestation of our responsibility toward the environment and the future,” she added.
Prof. Arida further explained that approximately 50 trees were planted during the event, including various native species such as Toba pine and other multipurpose plants with the potential to serve as sources of food and energy.
“In this activity, around 50 tree seedlings were planted, including native species such as Toba pine and multipurpose plants that have the potential to support food and energy resources,” she stated.
Chairperson of the organizing committee, Yesaya Pranata Simarmata, explained that the event represented a concrete environmental action involving multiple stakeholders and was intended to be carried out on a sustainable basis.
“This activity is not merely ceremonial; it is concrete evidence of our concern for the environment and future generations,” he said.
Marandus Sirait, a recipient of the Kalpataru Award, also highlighted the importance of individual commitment to environmental stewardship through consistent and simple actions.
“I am committed to planting trees every year as a form of responsibility toward the environment and future life,” he remarked.
Through this initiative, Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental preservation while encouraging younger generations to become more aware of and engaged in sustainable environmental practices.
