Attended by more than 100 participants from various circles such as lecturers, students, and practitioners, this webinar presented Prof. Joe M Regenstein (Department of Food Science, Cornell University, USA) and Prof. Irwandi Jaswir (Director of INHART, International Islamic University, Malaysia) as a speaker with the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S, officially opened the event.

USU PR - Food Technology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture (FP) Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) successfully held a Webinar Top Scientist with the theme "Global Halal Food in Industry and Marketing, between Faith and Science Fact" virtually and aired through the youtube channel, Tuesday ( 7/12/2021).

Attended by more than 100 participants from various circles such as lecturers, students, and practitioners, this webinar presented Prof. Joe M Regenstein (Department of Food Science, Cornell University, USA) and Prof. Irwandi Jaswir (Director of INHART, International Islamic University, Malaysia) as a speaker, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Dr. Ir. Tavi Supriana, M.S, directly opened this activity.

In his remarks, Dr. Tavi enthusiastically welcomed the webinar of top scientists as part of campus internationalization in accordance with the direction of the USU Chancellor who carried the tagline Transformation Towards the Ultimate. He hopes that this activity can be a momentum for students and lecturers at the Faculty of Agriculture to expand international networks and apply them in the form of education, research, and community service in accordance with the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

Moderated by the Secretary of the Food Technology Study Program, Adrian Hilman, S.T.P., M.Sc., this webinar is divided into 2 sessions. Prof. Joe M Regenstein was asked to be a speaker in session I with the material "The Animal Welfare Debate Around The Religious Slaughter of Animals: What do we actually know?".

In his presentation, he explained, regarding issues related to halal slaughter which are still often criticized in the western world and what things are being done to ward off these criticisms so that halal slaughter can become a large scale while maintaining halal slaughter regulations, rules and regulations. -rules related to holy books such as in the Koran and good animal welfare.

In the second session, Prof. Irwandi Jaswir acted as the main speaker with the theme "Food Analysis, Authenticity, and Halal" in his presentation, he explained some of the challenges faced in meeting the halal requirements and quality of a product such as the need for a more stringent monitoring system or audit by the halal authorities, the need for scientific methods which is up-to-date and reliable in analyzing non-halal components in products, as well as analytical techniques are the main challenges in product authentication.
