This article discusses the application of appropriate technology to process oil palm and livestock waste in Bekiung Village into organic NPK fertilizer. The program aims to enhance farmers’ knowledge, improve soil quality, and create new economic opportunities for the local community.

Bekiung Village is one of the villages in Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province. Generally, the community in this village earns a livelihood in agriculture and livestock farming. The main agricultural commodity cultivated is oil palm, while livestock commodities include cattle and goats. Based on available information, the main problem faced by the community is the accumulation of oil palm waste from harvest residues, fallen fruits, dead plants, as well as livestock waste that has not been utilized. Some farmers even burn the oil palm harvest residues around their cultivation areas, which can negatively impact surrounding plants.

In addition, farmers in this village still practice conventional cultivation by continuously using synthetic chemical fertilizers. Consequently, this negatively affects health and degrades soil properties. In fact, oil palm waste contains nutrients that can be processed into organic fertilizer. However, the lack of knowledge among farmers about the benefits and processing of oil palm and livestock waste remains an important issue that needs to be addressed.

The appropriate solution for this problem is the application of appropriate technology to process oil palm and livestock waste into organic fertilizer so that it can be directly utilized by farmers, either applied to their crops or commercialized to increase income. Furthermore, this effort can also provide additional employment opportunities to strengthen farmers’ economy, serving as one of the approaches to support the achievement of the SDGs. The objectives of this activity are to increase farmers’ knowledge and skills in processing oil palm and livestock waste into organic NPK fertilizer, to broaden farmers’ awareness of the importance of organic fertilizer as an alternative to synthetic fertilizers that benefit soil properties, to train farmers in producing organic fertilizer from agricultural and livestock waste around them, and to improve farmers’ income.
