HUMAS USU – The Graduate School of Universitas Sumatera Utara (SPs USU) was established in 1985 and serves as an institution that independently administers multidisciplinary master’s (S2) and doctoral (S3) programs within USU.
With a vision of becoming an internationally oriented graduate school while promoting local excellence, SPs USU is committed to producing graduates who are professional and highly competent in managerial and planning fields.
For the 2026/2027 academic year, USU has officially opened admissions for both master's and doctoral programs. This was announced by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni Relations, Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., at the USU campus on Thursday (18/06/2026).
Prof. Poppy stated that the admission process is currently underway with the following schedule:

Director of Admissions and Student Services, Prof. Dr. Rudy Sofyan, S.S., M.Hum., emphasized that applicants must comply with both the general and specific admission requirements as well as the registration procedures for USU’s master's and doctoral programs.
Before registering, applicants are advised to verify whether their intended degree level and study program are open for admission. Registration fees that have already been paid are non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another applicant or future admission period.
Applicants who possess a TPDA certificate issued by PLTI within the last two years are exempt from retaking the TPDA examination, although the registration fee remains unchanged. Only TPDA certificates issued by PLTI can be verified by the admissions committee. Applicants with TPDA certificates from other institutions are still required to take the TPDA examination.
All registered applicants must complete registration confirmation and print their participant card through the admissions portal according to the specified schedule.
Master's Program (S2) Requirements
- Bachelor's degree certificate.
- USU graduates must submit a bachelor's diploma or temporary graduation certificate (for current-year graduates).
- Graduates from other universities must submit their bachelor's diploma.
- Bachelor's academic transcript.
- Recent passport-sized photograph (3×4 cm).
- Two recommendation letters from undergraduate lecturers and/or employers (for employed applicants).
- National identity card (KTP).
- TPDA examination score issued by PLTI, or a valid TPDA certificate from the last two years.
- Interview conducted by the respective study program.
Doctoral Program (S3) Requirements
- Bachelor's and master's degree certificates.
- USU graduates must submit S1 and S2 diplomas or temporary graduation certificates (for current-year graduates).
- Graduates from other universities must submit both S1 and S2 diplomas.
- Undergraduate and master's academic transcripts.
- Recent passport-sized photograph (3×4 cm).
- Two recommendation letters from lecturers and/or employers.
- National identity card (KTP).
- TPDA examination score issued by PLTI, or a valid TPDA certificate from the last two years.
- Interview conducted by the respective study program.
- Dissertation proposal.
