“As beings who are evolutionarily closely related to primates, we bear a great responsibility to preserve these species,” said Prof. Poppy.

USU PR - The Universitas Sumatera Utara is hosting the 9th Asian Primate Symposium (APS) with the theme “Living in Harmony with Primates”. The event will be held from November 23-27. In collaboration with the Orangutan Information Center, Yayasan Ekosistem lestari, Yayasan KAIRA, and the Indonesian Orangutan Conversation Forum (FORINA). With an exhibition event held at the Digital Learning Center Building USU, on Sunday (24/11/2024).

 

The 9th Asian Symposium is routinely held every two years. This year, 20 country representatives participated. Taking the theme “Living in Harmony with Primates” is considered very relevant to the increasing global awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and ecological balance, especially in ensuring the survival of primates and their natural habitat.

 

Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt. as Vice Rector III of USU wants a center for primate studies, and this symposium underscores USU's commitment to deepen our understanding of the relationship between humans and primates while finding better solutions.

 

“There should be a study center because North Sumatra has more species than all of Indonesia. So I think a special study center is proposed,” said Prof. Poppy.

 

Furthermore, Vice Rector III, the University plays an important role in advancing science and education, not only discussing biological and ecological aspects but also integrating social and cultural dimensions in understanding our relationship with primates.

 

“As beings who are evolutionarily closely related to primates, we bear a great responsibility to preserve these species,” she continued.

 

Hadisiswoyo, M.A., M.Sc., as Chairman of the Committee, said that this symposium accommodates in strengthening understanding and collaboration between scientists, communities, and other stakeholders in protecting primates. Conservation does not only include scientific approaches, but also requires social awareness.

 

“One of our collaborations is to encourage, especially young researchers or conservationists to contribute to advancing primate conservation,” he said.

 

Novita Kusuma Wardani, S.Hut., M.AP., M.Env, Head of the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center, welcomed the presence of the country's delegates. This event can increase awareness and collaboration regarding primates.

 

“Committed to building a harmonious life side by side between humans and primates,” she said.
