“Security officers are not merely responsible for safeguarding the campus environment; they also represent the professionalism, friendliness, and integrity of Universitas Sumatera Utara,” said USU Vice Rector for Planning, Infrastructure, and Business.

MEDAN – USU PUBLIC RELATIONS: Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) emphasized the importance of professionalism, discipline, and friendliness among security officers in creating a safe campus environment while providing quality services to the academic community and the public. Security officers are considered to play a strategic role as one of the frontline elements shaping the institution’s public image.

The message was conveyed by USU Vice Rector for Planning, Infrastructure, and Business, Dr. Muhammad Anggia Muchtar, S.T., MM.IT., during a Joint Assembly of Security Officers themed “The Role of Security Officers as the Face of the Institution” held at USU. The event took place at the USU Rectorate Courtyard on Monday (October 12, 2026).

In his address, Anggia expressed his appreciation to all security officers who have carried out their duties in maintaining the security, order, and comfort of the campus environment. According to him, USU’s development in terms of infrastructure, academic facilities, and public services needs to be supported by a sound security system and professional, integrity-driven human resources.

“Security officers are not merely responsible for safeguarding the campus environment; they also represent the professionalism, friendliness, and integrity of Universitas Sumatera Utara,” he said.

He explained that USU currently has 252 security officers, consisting of 36 civil servants (PNS), 84 non-civil-servant employees, and 132 outsourced personnel. Of this total, 137 security officers are under the coordination of the Directorate of Academic Infrastructure Management, while the remaining 115 are assigned to faculties and relevant units.

He further explained that the large number of personnel requires strong coordination, discipline, and the implementation of uniform service standards. This will enable all security officers to perform their duties professionally and consistently at various campus service and security points.

Anggia emphasized that the duties of security officers are not limited to guarding entrances, managing vehicles, and conducting patrols. They also play a role in providing information, assisting visitors, and handling various situations that require prompt responses and appropriate approaches.

New students, parents, guests, and partners often interact with security officers for the first time when entering the university environment. Therefore, officers’ attitudes and communication styles also influence the public’s perception of the quality of USU’s services.

“We certainly want a safe and orderly campus. However, security must not be built through an unfriendly attitude. Security officers must be firm in enforcing regulations while remaining courteous in communication, fair in providing services, and responsive to the needs of the academic community and the public,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of maintaining a neat appearance, communicating effectively, and responding promptly when assistance is needed. Discipline, honesty, responsibility, and care must become part of the work culture of all USU security officers.

According to Anggia, as a state university with legal entity status (PTN-BH), USU continues to strengthen institutional governance and improve the quality of public services. These efforts require the involvement of all elements of the university, including security officers as an important part of the campus operational support system.

He further explained that the success of security management is measured not only by the absence of disruptions or unwanted incidents, but also by the creation of a sense of safety, comfort, and order, as well as increased public trust in the university.

Through the joint assembly, he encouraged all security officers to make the training and development activity a momentum to improve their competencies, strengthen coordination, and build a service-oriented work culture.

Anggia emphasized three principles that should guide the officers in carrying out their daily duties: “Firm in Safeguarding, Friendly in Serving, Sincere in Protecting.” These principles are expected to encourage security officers to provide protection and services that are professional, friendly, and respectful.

By strengthening the professionalism of its security officers, USU hopes to create a campus environment that is safe, orderly, comfortable, and grounded in integrity, while supporting improvements in the quality of services provided to the entire academic community and the public. (RJ)
