USU PR — Entering the second week of flood disaster response in North Sumatra and Aceh, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), through USU Care, continues to expand the reach of its humanitarian response to a number of affected areas. This effort is marked by the strengthening of mobile health services, medical emergency services, the provision of medicines and medical equipment, non-medical assistance, as well as rapid community health assessments as the basis for needs mapping and prioritization of interventions.

Spatially, the USU Care response covers several affected regencies and cities, including Medan City, Langkat Regency, South Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, Aceh Tamiang, and East Aceh.
This field data–based approach is carried out to ensure that assistance and services are directed to the areas most in need, including locations with disrupted access as well as shelters facing limitations in clean water and basic facilities.

In terms of human resources, as of December 9, 2025, registered volunteers ready to support field services consist of 121 general practitioners, 111 medical specialists, 58 nurses, and 5 pharmacists. The availability of these human resources strengthens the rotation of medical services across specialties in accordance with the needs at affected locations.

In Central Tapanuli Regency, the assistance distributed includes 2.5 tons of food supplies and 400 kilograms of medicines, along with 2 generator units and 3 Starlink devices to support service operations amid electricity and communication constraints. The team also distributed 120 vials of ATS, as well as supported service mobilization through the deployment of daily medical teams and operational vehicle support.

Meanwhile, in Aceh Tamiang, USU Care distributed 2 tons of food supplies and 400 kilograms of medicines, along with field facility support in the form of 4 tent sets, 50 field beds and mattresses, 2 generator units, and 3 Starlink devices. In addition, 80 vials of ATS were distributed and daily medical teams were deployed to ensure that health services continue to operate for displaced residents.

Entering the next phase, USU Care continues to prioritize the stabilization of primary health services, strengthening of posts and medical staff rotation, as well as the recording of daily needs to ensure that logistics distribution remains well-targeted, appropriate, and effective. These efforts are carried out through cross-sector coordination, including referral hospitals, health offices, professional organizations, and related stakeholders in affected areas.

USU Care emphasizes that this humanitarian response will continue with priority given to areas that have not yet been fully reached, strengthening of health and psychosocial services, and fulfillment of the basic needs of affected communities. Through cross-institutional collaboration and a data-driven approach, USU is committed to ensuring that the university’s presence extends beyond the emergency phase and continues to accompany communities toward a more sustainable recovery.
