USU PR – The 34th National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS), hosted by Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), commenced with a spectacular opening ceremony on the evening of Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at the Central Administration Bureau Hall.

The event opened with a multi-ethnic dance performance that enthralled the audience, comprising academics from universities across Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke. This cultural showcase not only entertained but also reinforced North Sumatra's reputation as a "miniature Indonesia," reflecting its harmonious diversity of ethnic groups.
The university’s leadership, including the rector, vice-rectors, and other attendees, added to the vibrant atmosphere by wearing traditional attire from various regions. Another highlight was the "hombo batu" (stone jumping) performance from South Nias, where performers leaped over a stone structure over 1.5 meters tall, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience.
A dazzling "mapping show" further captivated the attendees, blending advanced technology with cultural elements. Lights, booming sounds, and visual effects created a dynamic spectacle, showcasing USU’s readiness to host events of both national and international caliber.
For those unable to attend in person, the event was live-streamed on the official USU YouTube channel, ensuring a wider audience could enjoy the performance.
The festivities began even before the opening night. Judges and VIP guests were treated to a visit to the historic Maimun Palace, the seat of the Sultanate of Deli, built on August 26, 1888. Dressed in traditional Malay Deli attire, participants enjoyed a warm and elegant evening, complete with cultural performances and photo opportunities against the palace's regal backdrop.
One of the key attractions of PIMNAS Ke-34 was the exhibition of research posters at the Pancasila Building (formerly Pendopo USU). Hundreds of colorful and informative posters, representing student innovations and scientific achievements, lined the walls, drawing interest and admiration from students and visitors alike.
The 34th PIMNAS seamlessly wove together Indonesia’s cultural diversity, cutting-edge technology, and the pursuit of knowledge. This remarkable event will surely be remembered fondly by participants and attendees.
