JAKARTA – USU PUBLIC RELATIONS: Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) demonstrated its commitment to promoting the downstreaming of research outcomes and innovation development through its participation in the Indonesia Patent Business Forum 2026, held on November 3–5, 2026, at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).
At the event, nine invention and innovation products developed by Universitas Sumatera Utara were selected for exhibition, while four of them were given the opportunity to participate in pitching sessions with industry representatives. This participation marked a concrete step by USU in introducing research and innovation developed by its academic community to the business sector, while opening up opportunities for collaboration in patent development, utilization, and commercialization.
Carrying the theme “Patents as Drivers of the People's Economy,” the event served as a strategic platform bringing together inventors, universities, industry players, investors, and various stakeholders to strengthen the utilization and commercialization of inventions in Indonesia.
USU's participation in this national forum was coordinated by the Directorate of Scientific Writing, Publication, and Publishing (DITP3I), involving inventors whose inventions have the potential for further development. Through the pitching sessions, inventors had the opportunity to present their technologies' advantages, benefits, potential applications, and product development prospects to prospective industry partners and relevant stakeholders.

Beyond the pitching sessions, the presence of nine USU innovative products in the exhibition area also provided an opportunity to introduce various research outcomes developed by the university's academic community. These products reflect the potential for creativity, technological expertise, and the university's contribution to producing innovative solutions that address societal needs and respond to industrial developments.
USU's participation attracted further attention through a visit to its exhibition booth by the Minister of Law of the Republic of Indonesia and the Director General of Intellectual Property (DJKI). During the visit, the Minister of Law and the Director General of Intellectual Property had the opportunity to directly observe various invention and innovation products developed by USU.
The visit marked an important moment for USU to introduce research and innovation developed by its academic community to the government, while demonstrating the potential of university intellectual property as an asset that can be further developed to generate economic added value. The attention given by the leadership of the Ministry of Law and DJKI to the exhibited products also provided an opportunity to showcase USU's contribution to advancing innovation and intellectual property protection in Indonesia.
The Indonesia Patent Business Forum 2026 served as a strategic opportunity to strengthen synergy among universities, the government, the business sector, and industry. Through this forum, patents are encouraged to serve not only as legal protection for inventions but also as assets with commercial potential through collaboration, licensing, product development, and other forms of partnership.

For USU, participation in this event aligns with its efforts to strengthen the research, innovation, and intellectual property ecosystem across the university. Through DITP3I USU, assistance and facilitation for intellectual property protection continue to be strengthened to support lecturers and researchers in producing high-quality inventions, securing patent protection, and increasing opportunities for the utilization of innovation outcomes.
The selection of nine USU innovative products for exhibition and the participation of four products in pitching sessions with industry representatives are expected to serve as initial steps toward expanding partnership networks and creating opportunities for research commercialization. In this way, innovations developed by USU's academic community are expected to progress beyond research and patent registration stages into products and technologies that deliver tangible benefits to society.
Through its participation in the Indonesia Patent Business Forum 2026, Universitas Sumatera Utara continues to strengthen its role as a higher education institution that not only produces research and innovations but also promotes the utilization of research outcomes to support technological advancement, economic growth, and public welfare.
