FISIP USU Student Wins Gold and Silver Medals at International Taekwondo Championship

Ira Nurhidayah, a Sociology student at Universitas Sumatera Utara, won gold and silver medals at the 9th Gewinn Malaysia Open Taekwondo Championships 2026 in Kuala Lumpur.
HUMAS USU – Ira Nurhidayah, a Sociology student from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Sumatera Utara (FISIP USU), brought pride to the university on the international stage by winning awards at the 9th Gewinn Malaysia Open Taekwondo Championships 2026. The competition was held at KSL Esplanade Mall from April 30 to May 6, 2026.
Ira Nurhidayah won two categories simultaneously, earning a Gold Medal in the Senior Women’s Speed Kick category and a Silver Medal in the Senior Women’s Fin Class Kyorugi category.
The championship served as a platform to enhance achievement and sportsmanship among taekwondo athletes at the international level. In addition to fostering healthy competition, the event also encouraged athletes to develop their skills while upholding the values of sportsmanship. Various categories were contested, including Kyorugi, Poomsae, Speed Kick, and Speed Punch.
She explained that she joined the competition to showcase her achievements and improve her abilities through intense and professional competition, while also gaining valuable experience competing internationally.
“Through this championship, I also learned to develop my potential so that I could bring pride to Universitas Sumatera Utara,” she said.

This achievement was the result of discipline and consistency. According to her, the key to achieving maximum results is maintaining focus on both training and personal goals. As a student actively pursuing achievements, she believes it is important to push oneself to the fullest potential.
“To achieve this, the most important things are consistency, maintaining physical condition and stamina, and continuing to train and learn to improve my potential,” she stated.
The competition was attended by athletes from 10 countries: Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Australia, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.
