FIB USU Holds Public Lecture with Syaikh Prof. Dr. Mu’taz As Subayni

USU PUBLIC RELATIONS – The Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU) held a public lecture with Syaikh Prof. Dr. Mu’taz As Subayni, Professor of History and Islamic Studies at the University of Damascus, Syria, on Friday (September 4, 2026), at the FIB USU Hall. Carrying the theme “Integrating Knowledge and Islamic Tradition in Addressing Contemporary Challenges,” the event provided students with an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of Islamic history, civilization, and the development of knowledge.
During the public lecture, students were invited to explore the relationship between the development of knowledge and Islamic values through the study of Islamic history and civilization. The materials presented also provided students with an opportunity to learn more about the development of Islam in Indonesia and the importance of studying history through research.
In her remarks, Vice Rector I for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni Relations of USU, Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., emphasized that the rapid advancement of science and technology needs to be accompanied by values, ethics, and wisdom. She also highlighted the continued relevance of the Islamic scholarly tradition in addressing contemporary developments.
“Knowledge should not merely produce technological advances and innovation; it must also go hand in hand with values, ethics, and wisdom,” she explained.
Dekan FIB USU, Mhd. Pujiono, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., stated that students should not only focus on learning but also begin developing their research skills. He encouraged students to advance their academic studies, particularly those related to Islamic history in Indonesia, through research and learning.
“As students who genuinely love Islamic history, you should conduct thorough research,” he explained.
He expressed his hope that students would not stop after completing their undergraduate education but would continue to develop themselves through further education and research. According to him, students have opportunities to contribute as educators and researchers while producing valuable studies that contribute to the advancement of knowledge.
