The Rector of USU Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si expressed his appreciation and support for the socialization of INDONESIA's FOLU NET SINK 2030, which is one of the government's efforts to bring several strategic policies closer to the need for better earth conditions.

PR USU - Universitas Sumatera Utara in collaboration with FORETIKA held a Socialization of INDONESIA's FOLU NET SINK 2030 Sumatra Region. This event was attended by approximately 167 offline participants at the USU Student Center and 847 online participants on Thursday (26/06/2022).

The Rector of USU Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si expressed his appreciation and support for the socialization of INDONESIA's FOLU NET SINK 2030, which is one of the government's efforts to bring several strategic policies closer to the need for better earth conditions.

“The Indonesian government is very serious in dealing with the issue of climate change. This seriousness is manifested, among other things, by the establishment of the INDONESIA'S Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) NET SINK 2030 initiative. It is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the forestry sector, and other land uses or FOLU (Forestry and other Land Use) in 2017. 2030," he said.

In this socialization, the material on policies, strategies, and plans for implementing a mitigation action plan targeting the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 was presented to all Indonesian people, directly and through stakeholders.

“FOLU net sink or FOLU carbon net sink is net carbon sequestration which refers to the amount of carbon emission absorbed much more than it releases. So the FOLU net sink is a situation when the land and forest sector absorbs more carbon than it releases,” he explained.

The Rector hopes that this socialization will be able to provide additional information reinforcement for all participants who attend, both from the Government, academics as well as practitioners and environmental activists so that they are able to determine action plans and important programs that are in line with the goals of Indonesia's Folu Net Sink 2030.

"We hope that this socialization will be able to achieve the expected goals, and bring together interested parties in solving the climate and environmental crisis issues to achieve a better balance of nature. As well as to formulate recommendations needed for implementing targeted mitigation actions, and efficient," he said.

On the same occasion, Assistant for Economics II and North Sumatra Provincial Government Development Arief S. Trinugroho said that in the use and utilization of the campus environment, it is hoped that all students will be able to maintain and preserve the environment so as to reduce air pollution.

"I hope that students can take advantage of and maintain the campus environment so that they can reduce air pollution in the campus environment," he said.

Director-General of Forestry Planning and Environmental Management at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Ir. Ruandha Agung Sugardiman, M.Sc said that climate change occurs due to excessive human behavior towards the environment. So it is necessary to prevent and preserve the environment by reducing air pollution and planting trees in the campus environment.

"Let the whole community and students be able to protect the environment by reducing pollution and planting trees in the surrounding environment," he said.
