The Mining Engineering Study Program at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is an academic program that focuses on the science and technology of exploring, extracting, processing, and managing mineral and coal resources in a sustainable manner. This program is designed to produce engineering graduates who are capable of designing mining systems, managing post-mining environments, and applying safety and economic principles within the mining industry. Students are equipped with core competencies in mining geology, exploration, mining methods, mineral processing, and mine management. Supported by comprehensive laboratory facilities and proximity to mineral resource areas, graduates are prepared to pursue careers in the national and international mining industry, consulting firms, research institutions, or government agencies, with a strong understanding of sustainable social and environmental responsibility.

Students are equipped with competencies in exploration, mining design and operations, mineral processing, and sustainable environmental and mining economic management. The implementation of MBKM provides students with opportunities to gain off-campus learning experiences through industry internships, real-world projects, research, entrepreneurship, and community service, thereby ensuring that graduates possess work readiness and contextual understanding of the challenges in the mining industry. Supported by adequate laboratory facilities, a natural laboratory in Parapat (Lake Toba), and geographical proximity to various mining industrial areas, the USU Mining Engineering Study Program delivers learning that is applied, contextual, and relevant to stakeholder needs. The program is oriented toward continuous quality improvement through the evaluation of learning outcomes and the active involvement of industry, alumni, and professional associations. Graduates of the USU Mining Engineering Study Program are prepared to pursue national and international careers as engineers, mine planners, operational supervisors, consultants, researchers, and regulators, with strong professional competence and ethics to support the safe, efficient, and sustainable management of mineral resources.
